For the Dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Measure precisely for the best results.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Can use regular table salt or sea salt.
  • 1 tablespoon sugar Use granulated sugar for balance.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter Chilled and cubed before use.
  • 4 tablespoons cold water Make sure it’s icy.
For the Apple Filling

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar Enhances the apple flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Brings warmth and spice.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Brightens apple flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch Thickener for the filling.
For the Glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar Essential for the glaze.
  • 2 tablespoons milk For creamy texture.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Must for flavor.

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • Parchment Paper
  • Baking Sheet
  • whisk

Method

Directions
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in the chilled, cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Gradually add cold water, mixing gently until just combined. Wrap the dough in plastic and chill for 30 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Toss until apples are well-coated, and then set aside.
  4. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough into a rectangle about ¼-inch thick.
  5. Carefully transfer it to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Spoon the apple filling evenly down the center of the dough rectangle.
  6. Cut diagonal slits on both sides of the filling. Fold the dough flaps over the filling, alternating sides to create a braided effect.
  7. Place the kringle in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes.
  8. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Drizzle over cooled kringle.
  9. Let the glaze set before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.
