  • 1 cup Warm Water 105°F to 115°F
  • 1 tbsp Sugar A pinch to feed the yeast
  • 2 tsp Traditional Active Dry Yeast
  • 1 cup Warm Milk
  • 1 tbsp Honey Substitutable with sugar
  • 2 sticks Melted Butter
  • 3 large Eggs Two beaten, one for egg wash
  • 5.75 cups All-Purpose Flour Adjust as needed
  • 2 tsp Ground Cardamom Can substitute with cinnamon
  • 1 tsp Salt
For the Honey Orange Butter
  • 2 sticks Butter Softened
  • 3 tbsp Honey
  • 1 medium Zest of Orange

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Activate Yeast: Gently heat water between 105°F and 115°F. Mix in sugar and yeast, let sit 5 minutes until bubbly.
  2. Dough Preparation: In a mixer, combine warm milk, honey, melted butter, two beaten eggs, and yeast mixture. Blend in flour, cardamom, and salt.
  3. Knead Dough: Form a smooth ball, knead lightly by hand for about 5 minutes.
  4. First Rise: Transfer to a greased bowl, cover with cloth, let rise until doubled (1-1.5 hours).
  5. Shape Bread: Deflate dough, divide in half, braid each half. Place on parchment-lined trays.
  6. Second Rise: Cover and let rise until doubled (about 30 minutes).
  7. Preheat Oven: To 350°F, prepare an egg wash with remaining egg and water, brush on dough.
  8. Bake: Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  9. Make Honey Orange Butter: Beat together softened butter, honey, and orange zest until fluffy.
  10. Serve: Slice bread and serve with whipped honey orange butter. Optionally dust with ground cardamom.
