For the Soup
  • 1 bone Ham Bone Adds rich flavor; if not available, use a small boneless ham
  • 2 cups Cubed Ham Optional; adjust based on leftover ham
  • 1 cup Dried Navy Beans Quick-soak or use overnight soak method
  • 6 cups Water Adjust based on pot size and ingredients

Method
 

Instant Pot Method
  1. Rinse dried navy beans under cold water to remove impurities.
  2. Place rinsed beans in the Instant Pot with the ham bone, cubed ham, and enough water to cover ingredients.
  3. Lock the lid and set to HIGH pressure for 90 minutes.
  4. After cooking, perform a natural pressure release for 15 minutes.
  5. Remove the ham bone, shred any meat, and return it to the pot.
Stovetop Method
  1. Boil rinsed beans in a large pot for 5 minutes, then remove from heat and let sit for 1 hour.
  2. Drain beans, then add soaked beans, ham bone, cubed ham, and enough water to pot.
  3. Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce heat to low. Simmer for at least 3 hours, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove the ham bone, shred the meat, and return it to the pot.
