For the Tofu
  • 14 oz Firm or extra-firm tofu Drain and press for crispiness
For the Sauce
  • 3 tbsp Tamari Use gluten-free tamari for gluten-free version
  • 2 tbsp Water To thin out the sauce
  • 2 tbsp Maple syrup or coconut sugar Sweetener to balance flavors
  • 1 tbsp All-purpose flour or cornstarch To thicken the sauce
Flavorings
  • 2 tbsp Ground black pepper Adjust according to heat preference
  • 3 cloves Garlic Minced for best flavor
  • 1 inch Ginger Fresh, grated or minced
Additions
  • 1 each Hot peppers (jalapeños or Fresno) Optional, adjust to taste
  • 2 each Green onions Chopped for garnish

How to Make Black Pepper Tofu
  1. Prep Tofu: Begin by draining and pressing the tofu slabs for about 15 minutes.
  2. Make Slurry: In a small bowl, whisk together the tamari, water, sweetener, and flour.
  3. Cook Tofu: Heat oil in a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu and fry for approximately 10 minutes, turning occasionally, until it turns golden brown.
  4. Add Sauce: Pour the prepared slurry into the pan along with the ground black pepper, garlic, and ginger. Stir well and cook for another 3 minutes.
  5. Finish: Toss in the hot peppers and green onions, then stir-fry for an additional 5 minutes.
  6. Serve: Serve your Black Pepper Tofu over cooked rice or soba noodles.
