Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour You can try gluten-free flour, but results may vary.
  • 2 tablespoons Sugar Consider brown sugar for a hint of caramel flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon Instant Yeast Active dry yeast is a viable alternative.
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder Stick with standard amounts as no substitutions are typically needed.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt Can be reduced for a lower sodium option.
For the Wet Mixture
  • 1 cup Unsweetened Plant-Based Milk Any dairy or non-dairy milk works well.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract Feel free to omit for a simpler taste.
For the Coating and Cooking
  • 1/2 cup White Sesame Seeds Consider black sesame seeds for a stunning contrast.
  • Oil for Frying Opt for a neutral oil that can handle high temperatures.

Equipment

  • Large Bowl
  • floured surface
  • Deep pan
  • Slotted spoon

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, sugar, instant yeast, baking powder, and salt until everything is well combined and uniform in texture.
  2. Pour in the unsweetened plant-based milk and vanilla extract, and mix until a soft, sticky dough begins to form.
  3. Transfer the sticky dough to a floured surface. Knead for 5-7 minutes until the dough is soft, smooth, and elastic.
  4. Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Once risen, gently punch down the dough to release air, divide it into 6 equal parts, roll each piece in sesame seeds, and flatten into discs.
  6. In a deep pan, preheat enough neutral oil to fully submerge the donuts until it bubbles when tested with a chopstick.
  7. Carefully place each disc into the hot oil and fry, flipping every 5-7 seconds, until they puff up and reach a golden-brown hue.
  8. Once cooked, use a slotted spoon to remove the donuts from the oil. Let them drain on paper towels and cool for at least 5 minutes before serving.
  9. Enjoy your Bánh Tiêu warm, plain, or with your choice of sweet or savory fillings!
